“He filled them with wisdom, understanding, and skill to do all manner of work of the holy place, and to weave the woven and embroidered work with scarlet and fine linen, and to do all work of curious workmanship and embroidery.” — Exodus 35:35
My 5th grade Handicrafts and Fiber Arts students have been studying and exploring fiber arts this school year. My students learn how to weave utilizing looms, shaped both circular and rectangular. They have learned how to make their own looms, too. The colors and textures of yarn are wonderful materials to create artwork that is appreciated for both for its visual quality and for its function. These students learn how to create patterns that repeat, while also adding variety. The students also combined yarn to create mixed media works, such as collages with yarn that feature colorful landscapes. While requiring patience, working with fiber is a skillful art that results in reflection on Scripture as well as great joy in using our hands and the gifts given us by God.
