COACH DALE SATRIANO

My wife and I raised three boys with our sights set on three godly men. To the best of our abilities, we modeled a Christian life. We strove to teach them discipline, honesty, integrity, the love of God and people. The platform for much of this teaching was sports.

Our Christian life and athletic pursuits may seem like unrelated entities, but they share a profound connection. For our athletes, their faith and athletic endeavors are intertwined, each enriching the other.

On one hand, the Christian life is built on principles of discipline, perseverance, and self-sacrifice—qualities which are also essential for success in athletics. The Bible encourages us to, "run with endurance the race marked out for us" (Hebrews 12:1). This metaphor resonates deeply with our athletes, who strive to push their limits and overcome obstacles. The discipline required to train and compete at a high level is mirrored in the spiritual discipline needed to grow in our faith and follow Jesus' teachings.

Moreover, our athletes are called to be "salt and light" (Matthew 5:13-16) in their respective sports, using their platform to share God's love with teammates, opponents, and fans. By living out their faith in authenticity and compassion, they demonstrate the love of Christ and inspire others to explore their own spirituality. As the apostle Paul wrote, "Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God" (1 Corinthians 10:31).

In so doing, our student athletes embody the Christian values of compassion, humility, and service, demonstrating that athletic excellence and faith are not mutually exclusive, but rather complementary aspects of a well-rounded life.

Seen from another view, athletic pursuits can also deepen our Christian faith. Thrills of victory and agonies of defeat foster gratitude and humility, acknowledging that our abilities are gifts from God. The camaraderie and teamwork inherent in sports reflect the body of Christ, in which diverse individuals unite towards a common goal, supporting and encouraging each other along the way. The Christian life and athletic pursuits are not separate, but interconnected aspects of a life fully surrendered to God. Our athletes find purpose, joy, and fulfillment in their endeavors, while also growing in their faith and inspiring others to do the same. As the apostle Paul wrote, "I press on towards the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenwards in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 3:14).

In conclusion, bringing our faith to the game is essential among our student athletes. By embracing our beliefs, athletes experience a deeper sense of fulfillment and community, inspire others, and glorify God during competition. As the final whistle blows and the crowd disperses, our athletes know that their true victory lies not in the win or loss, but in the knowledge that they have honored their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, with every fiber of their being. Their legacy, a shining testament of the power of faith in action, will extend far beyond the playing field, permeating every aspect of their lives, and inspiring generations to come.
