Dr. Augustus holds a PhD in Biochemistry and Cell Biology from Rice University, where she studied the intracellular signaling of hormones. Additionally, she holds a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science from Texas A&M University and a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology from UT Southwestern. Melanie completed her post-doctoral work at Rice University, studying the role of peroxins in Arabidopsis thaliana. She spent seven years as adjunct faculty teaching Biochemistry, Genetics, Anatomy & Physiology, General Biology, and Science courses for non-majors at multiple colleges and universities, while homeschooling her children for ten years. Melanie has presented her work at numerous conferences over the years and has published her work in several journals, including the Journal of Biological Chemistry, PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences) USA, Plant Cell, Plant Molecular Biology, and Genetics.
Melanie loves to travel but finds most of her “travel” these days is limited to driving her teens all over Houston to their various engagements. She has discovered the hours of driving provide a perfect opportunity to listen to some really great books on Audible. Melanie is a member of First Presbyterian Church and has been married to her husband, David, for 22 years. They have three daughters, Emily, Natalie, and Ella.
